Ford Mustang Fastback
When Ford released the Mustang nobody could have known the legacy it would leave on American culture throughout the decade. They were not even sure if the fastback Mustang would even make strong enough sales to continue making it. The 1965 Mustang left the world changed and made Ford an icon for the country and the decade.
The debut of the 1965 Mustang was in April of 1964 and America was in love. Before the calendar year was over 50,000 Fastback Mustangs had been purchased and were driving around the roads of America. This became the standard for sales at Ford for years to come. What Ford did to strike gold was in the diversity in people that were purchasing the car.
On one end there was a practical six cylinder engine that could be had at an affordable price. Many families were buying the car for the more practical intentions. The luxury versions were great for the working middle class. But the group that took hold of the car was the younger crowd who were looking for a muscle car. The fastback Mustang took over as the high performance car of the decade.
When the 1965 Mustang was being developed it was based on the previous Ford Falcon and Fairline. Many of the parts were shared including the chassis and suspension. At first the car was going to be a two seated and be considered a roadster but to appeal to a larger audience they made it a four seated.
The design of the car was led by two men Donald Frey and Lee Iacocca. These two changed Ford forever. New awards started to rain in. The Mustang ended up in 1964 being the pace care for the Indianapolis 500 and then went on to take first and second place at the Tour De France international rally.
In 1965 more racing flowed through the Mustang. There were ten Mustangs built in the year that had a 427 cubic inch V-8 that were entered in the National Hot Rod Association Experimental Class. The car then qualified and won the Factory Stock Eliminator Class. In the same year road racing also became a staple for the legendary car. The Mustang won five of the Sports Car Club of America’s six race divisions in 1965.
When the Ford Mustang made its announcement to the world that it was a force was when James Bond chose it for his new car. In the legendary movie Goldfinger James Bond (who was played by Sean Connery) drove the Mustang into the history books. The success of the 1965 Mustang has led to many other successes for the car.
Motor Trend labeled the Mustang car of the year twice in 1974 and 1994. The Mustang has also been on Car and Driver Ten Best List for five different years and was the first American car to win the Tiffany Gold Medal. 1965 was the debut of the first Mustang and Ford’s first pony car and we have never looked back.
